Allah’s Prophet Nuh (A.S.)’s supplications and the fate of his nation

Surah Nuh is the 71st Surah of the Quran. Its verse number is 28, Ruku number is 2. Surah Nuh was revealed in Makkah. In this surah, the Prophet of Allah, Hazrat Nuh (a.s.) and his people are described. The topic of this surah is the invitation of Prophet Nuh (a.s.), his nation’s deviation from religion despite being invited for a long time, the prayer of Prophet Nuh (a.s.), the coming of Allah’s punishment, etc.

This Surah was revealed in the early stages of the Meccan life of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him).

In the verses 1-20 of Surah Nuh, Allah the Exalted said, how He invited His people to Deen. How for a long time he spent every effort to bring them to the path of guidance. But when his nation did not respond to his call, Prophet Nuh (A.S.) prayed to Allah to destroy the infidels of his nation. That event is described in Surah Nuh verses 21-28.

Allah Ta’ala says, “Noah said, ‘O my Lord, my people have disobeyed Me and are following a man whose wealth and children only increase his loss.’ And they are making terrible plans. They say: Do not forsake your gods and do not forsake Wad, Suwa, Yaguch, Yauk and Nasr. They have led many astray. So you increase the misguidance of the wrongdoers.

Because of their sins they were drowned, then submitted to hell. They had no helper except Allah Ta’ala.

Nuh also said, “O my Lord, you will not spare a disbeliever in the world.” If You spare them, they will lead Your servants astray and give birth only to sinners, infidels.

O my Lord! Forgive me, my parents, those who enter my house as believers, and the believing men and believing women, and only increase the destruction of the wrongdoers.”

The teaching and guidance we get from these verses:

1. In general, infidels and sinners should seek guidance from Allah. But when an unjust person or community transgresses, there is no hope left for them to be guided, then they can be cursed with Allah.

2. The reason why many poor and lower class people go astray is because they follow the leading and influential people in the society. They do not think for themselves. It is everyone’s duty to use the thinking power and conscience given by God. Everyone has to bear the responsibility and punishment of going astray.

3. Infidels and sinners will be punished in the grave. Allah says about the people of Prophet Nuh (a.s.) that they fell into the fire after drowning.

4. When praying to Allah, one should pray for oneself first. Then he will pray for his family, parents, children and all Muslims.
