Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad election postponed for the second time

On the eve of the election, the Election Commission postponed the Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad election for the second time citing unavoidable reasons.

Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Shirin Akter postponed the election.

Meanwhile, although polling is scheduled to take place in this upazila on Sunday (June 8), the regional party United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) is blocking the road in the upazila morning and evening demanding ‘fair and peaceful’ elections. The party called for the blockade in support of a candidate named Itimoy Chakma Olive.

Sachal Chakma, chief organizer of UPDF Rangamati unit, said that the party is observing a morning-evening blockade on Saturday morning-evening to protest against the presence of terrorist forces in Baghaihat and the presence of terrorist forces in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district for illegal influence and to demand a fair and peaceful election including arresting them from Baghaihat.

He also claimed that about 50 terrorists went to Baghaihat in three big microbuses around 1.30 pm on Friday. They are now armed in the abandoned office of KPM. Besides, they have been threatening the election agents of chairman candidate Olive Chakma and female vice chairman candidate Sumita Chakma since a few days ago.

Meanwhile, in support of the blockade, activists have been blocking various parts of the Khagrachari-Sajek road since morning by burning tires and throwing trees. As a result, all types of traffic are stopped on this route. Tourists staying in Sajek since morning could not leave Sajek, but they are supposed to leave Sajek in the afternoon with the help of the army.
