Blockade of road in Sylhet to protest the detention of 3 transport workers


The transport workers blocked the road for five hours in protest against the detention of three people including a truck carrying stones in Sylhet’s Companyganj.

On Tuesday (June 25) around 7 am, the workers stopped the traffic by leaving the truck across the road in Boubazar, Tukerbazar, Lachukhal, Thanabazar and Borni areas of the Sylhet-Bholaganj road. Later, at around 12 noon, they withdrew the blockade with the assurance of the administration with a 24-hour ultimatum.

According to the investigation, on Monday (June 24) at 11:30 p.m., the police raided the Hitech Park area on the Sylhet-Bholaganj road after receiving information that the ‘Sadapathar’ of the Sadapathar tourist center was being stolen and taken away by a truck. Meanwhile, three people were arrested along with a stone-carrying truck. Later, a case against them was sent to the court.

Due to this incident, at 7 am on Tuesday morning, the transport workers blocked the road in Companyganj’s Boubazar, Tukerbazar, Lachukhal, Thanabazar and Borni areas by placing the truck crosswise in the middle of the road. Meanwhile, they protested demanding the release of the detained workers and the withdrawal of police station OC Golam Dastgir Ahmad.

Kabir Ahmad, President of Companyganj Labor Union said, ‘Police do not arrest those who steal stones from Bholaganj. On the contrary, our truck drivers and laborers who transport goods on hire have been arrested. The road has been blocked to demand the release of the detained workers.

In this regard, Mahfuzur Rahman, General Secretary of Companyganj Workers’ Union, said, ‘The administration has been given a 24-hour ultimatum. If the demand is not accepted, an indefinite blockade will be called from tomorrow.’

Companyganj Upazila Chairman Mojir Uddin said that the matter will be resolved in the best way.
