Can Southgate play the 100th match by taking England to the semis?

Gareth Southgate will complete his 100th match as England coach in the Euro Championship quarter-final against Switzerland. After making his debut as England coach in 2016, he stood in the dugout in 99 matches. Southgate will complete his 100th match today as the third coach in England football history.

In 1946, Walter Winterbottom was appointed the first full-time coach of the England football team. He is the longest serving coach of the England national team. England played 139 matches under him till 1962. Second most played 113 matches under Alf Ramses (1963-1974).

After Roy Hodgson’s departure in 2016, Sam Allardyce coached the England national team for one match. Southgate replaced Allardyce in November of that year. Since then he has been leading England for 8 years.

Southgate’s biggest success in the 99-match run was the team’s runner-up finish at the 2020 Euro Championship. His team progressed to the final at Wembley at home but could not hold on to the lead against Italy. Italy equalized and took the match to extra time. Then the tiebreaker. There, the Azzurri crushed the dreams of the host visitors.

England played two World Cups under Southgate. In 2018, Russia had to leave the World Cup in fourth place after losing the semifinals to Croatia. Qatar was last eliminated from the World Cup in the quarter-finals.

Southgate’s England are still keeping their dreams alive in this year’s Euro Championship by wearing the runners-up jersey. Southgate’s 100th match will be colorful as England’s title dream will live on if they win against Switzerland tomorrow Saturday.
