College student shot dead, expelled Chhatra League leader arrested


Police have arrested the expelled Chhatra League leader Hasan Al Farabi Joy in connection with the killing of college student Ijaz during the celebration of the winning candidate of Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila election. Later, according to the information given by him, the weapon used in the murder was seized from a bush in Bhatpara of the upazila.

He was arrested early on Friday (June 7) from Kutubpur village in Netrakona district’s Atpara. Superintendent of Police Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain gave this information in a press conference held at his office on Saturday (June 8) around 12 noon.

Mohammad Shakhawat Hossain said that Ashraful Rahman Ijaz, a student of Brahmanbaria Government College, was killed in front of Khan Tower in Collegepara of the municipal area on Wednesday at 6 pm. In a video, Farabi is seen shooting him and fleeing the scene with a pistol in his waistband.

Ijaz had a previous conflict with the ousted vice-president of District Chhatra League Hasan Al Farabi Joy. There was an argument between them at the polling station on Wednesday morning. In the evening during the victory procession, Jai shot Ijaz when the dispute broke out again.

Superintendent of Police also said that Khoka collected a weapon on the day of voting. He handed it over to Farabi. In the afternoon, Farabi shot BCL activist Ijaz during an argument with Khoka over a previous dispute.

Meanwhile, Ijaz’s relatives gathered in front of the Police Superintendent’s Office after receiving the news of Farabi’s arrest. They protested and demanded the arrest of Khoka and other accused.
