Demiral, the hero of Turkey’s win against Austria, is banned for 2 matches

Merih Demiral, the hero of Turkey’s victory over Austria in the Euro Championship, has been banned for 2 matches. Uefa banned him after accusing him of celebrating a goal in an ultra-nationalist manner.

Demiral scored both goals in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Austria. After scoring a goal, he raised his fingers and showed a special sign. Later UEFA said to investigate the matter. The agency then announced last Wednesday that an inspector had been appointed to investigate Demiral’s celebrations.

“He has been banned for failing to comply with the general principles regarding sanctions, breaching basic rules of decency, displaying anything other than the game during the match and bringing the game of football into disrepute,” UEFA said in a statement on Friday.
