Disbursement of Tk 130 crore loans to poor women in 15 years


In the last 15 years, revolving loans of Tk 130 crore have been distributed among rural poor women, said Minister for Women and Child Affairs Simin Hossain (Rimi).

On Monday (June 10) in the budget session of the Parliament, Muhammad Saiful Islam, Member of Parliament for Dhaka-19 Constituency, wanted to know the progress and success of the government’s steps to rescue and rehabilitate the women who were burdened with the debts of various NGOs. The minister gave this information in response. Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the parliament.

Simin Hossain (Rimi) said that the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs is conducting micro-credit programs for employment and rehabilitation of women in the country. Microcredit Program for Self-Employment of Women Under this program, loans are given to trained women through the office of the District and Upazila Women’s Affairs Officer for income-generating programs, fish farming, poultry farming, small business cattle and goat fattening etc. Working husbands deserted and widows can apply to the District/Upazila Women Affairs Officer.

He said, no interest is collected from the borrowers. However, 5 percent service charge is charged. A woman is given a loan of up to 25 thousand taka individually and up to a group of up to two lakh taka.

Regarding the success of the last 15 years (2009-10 to 2023-24), the minister said that the total allocation for this sector was Tk 29 crore 78 lakh 20 thousand till April of the financial year. So far 1 lakh 24 rural poor women have been given revolving loans of Tk 130 crore 64 lakh 34 thousand by the said allocation. So far the amount of recovery from these loans is 107 crores 35 lakhs 8 thousand. The rate of realization is 82.17 percent.
