‘I have been suffering a lot on the boat for four days. A glass of water inside the house. I cook on the boat with my wife, son and grandson, eat on the boat, sleep on the boat. I’m in a lot of trouble.

This is how old couple Shamsul Alam-Anjuara Begum of Chargujimari village of Hatia union of Ulipur upazila of Kurigram were speaking with tearful voices.

But not only Shamsul Alam-Anjuara Begum couple; After investigation, it was found that hundreds of houses of Chargujimari village were submerged in flood water. Everyone has taken refuge in high dams or shelters. Many have settled in relatives’ houses with their families. Those who have no way to go are living in boats tied to houses. But there are more problems with animals and small children.

Anjuara Begum told Jago News, ‘I am keeping my elder son and son’s wife in Guchchagram. I have been on a boat with my husband, elder son and grandson for the last four days. On the one hand the suffering of flood, on the other hand if there is no one at home, household items are lost or swept away in the current. There is no high place around to stay there. All in all, I’m in trouble.

Aslam Hossain of Gujimari village said, ‘Every house of my neighbor has been submerged in water. Some are on high places by boats or scaffolding. Every family here is in a lot of trouble.’

Rakibul Hasan, executive engineer of Kurigram Water Development Board, said that the water of Brahmaputra and other rivers flowing over the district may rise for another 48 hours. At three points of the Brahmaputra water is flowing over Vipatseema. The water of other rivers is below the flood limit.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Hai Sarkar said that so far 173 metric tons of rice and 10 lakh taka have been allocated for distribution in 9 upazilas for Banvasis. 600 metric tons of rice and 30 lakh taka are stored. Which will be distributed in phases.
