Lakhs of water-logged people in Jamalpur, 214 educational institutions closed


Lakhs of people in six upazilas have become waterlogged in Jamalpur due to the heavy rains of the last few days. Besides, 214 educational institutions have been declared closed.

The waterlogged areas include – Islampur Upazila Sadar Union, Chinaduli, Patharshi, Sapdhari, Belgacha, Kulkandi, Noarpara, Palbanda; Sadar Union of Dewanganj Upazila, Chikajani, Chukaibari, Bahadurabad, Char Amkhawa, Dangdhara, Parramrampur, Hatibhanga, Purasvar, Ghosherpara of Melandah Upazila, Mahmudpur, Charpakerdah and Jorkhali Union of Madarganj Upazila, Bakshiganj and Sarishabari Upazila’s lower area unions.

According to the sources of the District Directorate of Primary and Secondary Education, a total of 63 secondary educational institutions including 30 in Islampur Upazila, 25 in Dewanganj, 7 in Motherganj and one in Bakshiganj have been closed due to flood waters. Besides, 151 primary schools have been declared closed in six upazilas of the district.

District Secondary Education Officer (Acting) S. M. Mozammel Hasan said that 63 secondary schools have been closed due to flood water. And in schools where water has entered the classrooms, the assessment tests are also closed.

District Primary Assistant Education Officer Abu Tarek Md. Ronak Akhtar said that 151 primary schools are closed in six upazilas of the district except Sadar upazila. Once the water recedes, students will be able to return to class.

Meanwhile, on Saturday (July 6) night, District Water Development Board (PUBO) water gauger Abdul Mannan said that the water in the Yamuna river has started to decrease gradually. However, at Bahadurabad ghat point, the water is flowing 90 cm above the boundary line.
