Malaysian House of Representatives meeting with Speaker

Bangladesh National Parliament Speaker Dr. With Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury today in the Parliament of Malaysia, Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives Tan Seri Dato Dr. Bilateral meeting of Johari bin Abdul was held.

During the meeting, they discussed bilateral friendly relations, trade-investment relations, Bangladesh’s membership in ASEAN, Rohingya issue, parliamentary alliance group including labor market, education and tourism.

Earlier, Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury was welcomed and given a guard of honor when he arrived at the Parliament of Malaysia. During this time he visited the Speaker’s office, signed the visit book and exchanged greetings.

Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury said that Malaysia was the first country in Southeast Asia to recognize Bangladesh immediately after independence and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman visited Malaysia in 1973.

He said that Bangladesh has achieved commendable progress in various social indicators including poverty alleviation, education, 100% electrification, digitalization, information technology, women empowerment through the continuous development march of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.


The speaker said that Bangladesh-Malaysia can work together in various fields including information technology, blue economy, climate change, energy sector, agriculture, food security as an area of ​​mutual cooperation. At this time, he urged Malaysia to invest in 100 Special Economic Zones of Bangladesh and emphasized on making the commercial relations between the two countries more dynamic.

The speaker expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian government for providing employment opportunities to about 5 lakh Bangladeshi manpower and said that the large number of human resources that Malaysia has involved in their development activities from Bangladesh is contributing to the economic development of both countries.

Speaker Shireen Sharmin Chowdhury congratulated Malaysia on assuming the presidency of ASEAN in January 2025 and sought Malaysia’s sincere cooperation in considering Bangladesh’s application to become ASEAN’s ‘Sectoral Dialogue Partner’. The speaker also expressed optimism that Malaysia will play a strong role in the repatriation of Rohingya as the chair of ASEAN.

Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury requested the Speaker of the Malaysian House of Representatives to finalize the process of forming the Bangladesh-Malaysia Parliamentary Friendship Group and invited the Malaysian Parliamentary Friendship Group to visit Bangladesh.


Malaysian House of Representatives Speaker Tan Seri Dato Dr. Johari bin Abdul Bhuiyan praised the development of Bangladesh under the leadership of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Appreciating the Bangladeshi workers, he said that they are very hardworking and talented. He suggested discussions with the Ministry of Human Resources to solve the problem of workers not being able to come to Malaysia. Also Dr. Johari bin Abdul suggested continuing the dialogue with the Myanmar government on Rohingya repatriation and assured that Malaysia will play a strong role in resolving the Rohingya crisis as the ASEAN chair.
