Prime Minister on the way to China

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went on a four-day state visit to China. A number of agreements and memorandums of understanding may be signed with China during the Prime Minister’s visit.

A chartered flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the Prime Minister and her entourage left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 11:10 am on Monday. The flight is scheduled to land at Beijing Capital International Airport at 6pm Beijing time.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese Premier Li Qiang will hold an official meeting on the second day of the four-day visit on July 9. He will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping the next day on July 10. On the same day, Sheikh Hasina will meet China’s Parliament National People’s Congress President Zhao Leji. He will also hold several meetings with Chinese businessmen.

Bangladesh exports one billion dollars worth of goods to China. In contrast, 13 billion dollars worth of goods are imported from China. Initiatives will be taken to eliminate this huge trade deficit. In the meantime, preparations have been made for signing 10 agreements and MoUs.

The discussion will be about a loan equivalent to 7 billion dollars. It will prioritize trade support and loans under budget support, investment protection, digital economy, blue economy, promulgation of free trade agreement survey, road network, construction and renovation of multiple bridges. In particular, how China wants to work in the Teesta project will also be discussed.

Besides visiting China twice in the last decade, Sheikh Hasina has met the country’s President Xi Jinping four times. Among them, the bilateral visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to Beijing in 2014, the visit of Xi Jinping to Dhaka in 2016, the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to Beijing again in 2019 and the meeting between them on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in South Africa in 2023. This is the third time that Sheikh Hasina is going to Beijing on a four-day bilateral visit.
