Rabi teachers strike for seventh day

Rajshahi University (Rabi) teachers have observed an all-out strike for the seventh consecutive day demanding the withdrawal of ‘Pratya Scheme’ of universal pension and introduction of individual pay scale for teachers.

They held this program at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Senate building of the university from 11:00 on Sunday (July 7).

Professor Omar Farooq Sarkar, General Secretary of the University Teachers’ Association, said, “There is no use in explaining our calculations.” It is no use explaining our law. In the darkness of the night, he will announce, and also revise that announcement. Who gave you his rights? No one is taking responsibility for this verification scheme except the Ministry of Finance. Only those who are sitting in this ministry, are they all? Do we have any experts? Instead we need some new thinking. Sit and talk with us. University teachers want to stay in research and study. Don’t let them down the street.

Professor Habibur Rahman, president of the teachers’ association, said that the government’s universal pension program was a very commendable and public welfare initiative. But those in charge have disputed the initiative. We are not talking about scrapping the verification scheme. There are 403 types of classes in suffix scheme. As they are not doing any movement, we cannot take their responsibility. We are here to withdraw the names of university teachers from this certification scheme. Some vested interests are trying to divert our position program. But they will not succeed. We will continue the program until the demands are met.
