Removal of UP Chairman and Member from Madukhali


Local Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shah Asaduzzaman Tapan and Ward No. 1 Member (Member) Ajit Kumar Biswas have been removed from their posts in connection with the beating to death of two construction workers for allegedly setting fire to an idol in Panchpalli of Dumain Union of Madhukhali Upazila of Faridpur.

This information is known in the notification issued by Local Government Department UP Branch-1 of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.

In the notification signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Puravi Goldar on Sunday (July 7), it is mentioned that two construction workers in Panchpalli village of Dumain Union against Dumain Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shah Asaduzzaman and Ward No. 1 member (member) Ajit Kumar Biswas of Faridpur’s Madhukhali Upazila on April 18. They were suspended as the Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur recommended action under the Local Government (Union Council) Act for their alleged involvement in the murder.

The government feels that it is not appropriate from the administrative point of view to exercise the powers of UP by them on that complaint. In this situation, they have been removed from their posts as they have committed crimes under the Local Government Act. In the notification, the Madukhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) has also been asked to take necessary measures to issue a gazette notification regarding the declaration of vacant seats under the same Act.

On April 18, there was an incident of setting fire to the sari of the idol of Panchapalli Sarvajanin Kalimandir of Dumaine Union. In this incident, the local residents suspect the involvement of the construction workers of the wash block of Panchapally Government Primary School adjacent to the temple. Later, four construction workers were beaten up in a room of the school. Two workers died that night.

Three videos of the workers being held and beaten later went viral on Facebook. UP Chairman Shah Asaduzzaman can be seen participating in the beating of workers in that video. Soon after the video went viral, the UP chairman and members went into hiding. The police could not arrest them till date.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Madhukhali Police Station Miraj Hossain said that there were three separate cases of murder, attack on police and temple arson in Madhukhali’s Panchpalli incident. Among them, 32 people have been arrested in the case of attack on the police. Eight of them have been arrested in the murder case. In the meantime, four persons in the case of attack on the police and seven persons in the case of murder have given their statement in the court. Several raids have been conducted to nab the UP Chairman and members. But they have not been arrested yet.
