River water is decreasing, erosion is increasing


All the rivers of Gaibandha are flowing below the low water level. As a result, the river erosion in this area is becoming evident day by day. Thousands of bighas of cropland are disappearing under the river. Several hundreds of residences and educational institutions are under threat.

According to the information given by the control room of Gaibandha Water Development Board (PUBO), in the last 24 hours, the water of Brahmaputra and Yamuna rivers is flowing below 137 cm at Phulchari point, 165 cm of Ghaghat river at New Bridge point of the city and 140 cm at Chakarhimapur point of Gobindganj upazila.

For several days, the erosion of Teesta, Brahmaputra and Yamuna rivers in several areas of Sadar, Sundarganj and Phulchhari upazilas of the district has destroyed crop lands along with settlements.

Gaibandhar Phulchari Upazila resident of Fazlupur Union. Shahin Alam said that 10-15 houses have been lost under the river due to the erosion of the river. More than 20 houses have been evacuated to avoid erosion. No one is doing anything to prevent erosion.
