Students blocked the highway and played football

Students of Rabindra University blocked the Bogra-Nagarbari highway for an hour with four demands, including cancellation of quota system in government jobs and retention of merit-based recruitment circular. Meanwhile, they played football on the empty road by throwing bamboo on both sides of the highway.

The program was held in front of Academic Building-3 of Shahjadpur Rabindra University in Sirajganj on Sunday (July 7) around 4 pm. Meanwhile, traffic jam was created for about two kilometers on both sides of the highway.

Earlier, hundreds of students gathered in front of Academic Building-3 with placards, banners and festoons and national flags. Later they marched around the campus and blocked the Bogra-Nagarbari highway as the main gate. During the siege, the students threw bamboo on both sides of the road and stood in the middle and recited Kazi Nazrul Islam’s ‘Karar Oi Louh-Kapat’ song and ‘Rebellious’ poem. Meanwhile, some students played football on the highway.

During the blockade program, students said that quotas are scattered everywhere, including jobs, admission exams. As a result, depriving the talented, relatively few talented people are taking advantage in these fields. This discrimination is unacceptable. However, this movement is not demanding the cancellation of quota. Their demand is that the 2018 circular should be upheld by setting up a commission and reforming the quota system by keeping a maximum 10 percent quota in government jobs.

Ashraful Islam Rakib is one of the members of the committee leading the ‘anti-discrimination student movement’ at Rabindra University. He told Jago News that the highway was blocked on the orders of the Centre. Again if any announcement is made, it will be implemented. The movement will continue until the demands are met.
