Sylhet city is drowned in rain even though the water level of Ban has decreased


Although the flood situation in Sylhet has improved a little, the city has been submerged again in just 6 hours of continuous rain. The low-lying areas of the city have been submerged in water since Sunday (June 2) after 1 am. People are in extreme trouble. Residents of low-lying areas are particularly suffering. Many people’s homes have knee-to-waist water.

It has been seen on the ground that most of the areas including Nagir, Sobhanighat, Upshahar, Taltala, Jamtala, Sheikhghat, Ghasitula, Beter Bazar, Shamimabad, Bagbari, Hararpar have been submerged in water. This situation has arisen because the water of the Surma river has overflowed and entered the city due to continuous rains.

According to the Sylhet Meteorological Office, 226.6 millimeters of rain has been recorded in Sylhet in 24 hours from 6 am on Sunday to 6 am on Monday. No rain was reported within 24 hours till 12 midnight on Sunday. It started raining after 12 pm.

Meanwhile, the residents of the city were in dire straits as water entered their houses in the middle of the night. Many went to safe shelters but could not save their belongings including household furniture. The city dwellers have suffered a lot.

Zahidul Haque, a resident of Shamimabad area of ​​the city, said that water entered the house in the middle of the night. All the furniture in the house sinks in it. Had to spend the whole night sitting on the bed.

Abu Sadat Mahi, a resident of Bagbari area of ​​the city, said that when the monsoon season comes, danger looms large. Everything was normal till 12 pm. Then the situation worsened when it started raining. Waist-deep water entered the house at three o’clock in the morning.

He said that even though the wife and children could reach another house safely, none of the furniture in the house could be saved. Everything is soaked in water and spoiled.

Sylhet Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib Hossain said that 226.6 millimeters of rainfall has been recorded in Sylhet in the last 24 hours. There is a chance of rain on Monday as well.

The lower areas of Sylhet are in a state of inundation due to continuous rains and floods caused by the upstream flows of the last few days. However, due to non-rainfall, the water in the river began to decrease slightly from the last two days. As a result, the overall situation was slightly improving. However, due to the rain since Sunday night, new areas were flooded again.

According to Sylhet district administration, 68 wards including 9 wards of Sylhet City Corporation have been inundated by flood. More than 700 grams have been submerged in water. As of Sunday, the number of flood-affected people was more than 6 lakh.
