The bridge collapsed in the river due to the pressure of drinking water

A part of the bridge built over Jhenai river in Tangail has collapsed. The communication system has been closed on the Banamali-Jamoil road in Nagadashimla.

On Wednesday (June 5) around 3 pm, the bridge built over Jhenai river collapsed in Banmali area of Gopalpur upazila. After the collapse of the bridge, the locals are crossing the river risking walking on the debris accumulated in the river.

It is known that the bridge was constructed in the year 1996 on Jhenai river in Banamali area of Nagadashimla upazila. The length of the bridge is 40 meters and width is 5 feet. Due to the rise of water in the river, the debris aggregates and freezes on the pillars of the bridge. Due to the lack of soil under the pillars of the bridge, the middle part of the bridge collapsed and fell into the river due to the strong current and the pressure of the water. The rest is also at risk.

Aynal Haque, a member of the local union council, said that the debris accumulated under the bridge was cleaned before the water came into the river. This is how I have done it for the past five years. But suddenly some part of the middle of the bridge broke and fell into the river.

He said that after the collapse of the bridge, people are crossing the river by walking on the debris accumulated in the river.

In this regard, Gopalpur Upazila LGED Executive Engineer Fattaur Rahman said that the bridge was old for a long time. The width of the bridge was 5 feet. The bridge was built over the river Jhenai for the purpose of local traffic. Being an old bridge, it was not suitable for renovation. A proposal will be sent for the construction of a new bridge.
