The cost of importing referral hospital equipment may increase

The government is going to increase the duty on the import of more than two hundred medical equipment and equipment for referral or expensive hospitals. Finance Ministry sources said that there will be an announcement in this regard in the Finance Minister’s budget speech.

The 2024-25 budget may impose a 10 per cent tariff on this sector, up from 1 per cent at present. However, these hospitals are still enjoying other duty and tax exemption benefits.

The large private hospitals of the country are getting various discounts under referral hospitals on the condition of providing free treatment to 5 percent of indigent patients. However, as most of the hospitals did not fulfill this condition, it was levied at only 1 percent in FY 2016-17.
