The number of millionaires in the country has decreased


The number of millionaire account holders in the country has decreased this time after increasing several times. According to these, the amount of money kept has also decreased. People related to the sector say that people’s confidence in the banking sector has decreased due to various reasons. Which affects all categories of depositors.

According to the data of Bangladesh Bank, in the first quarter of this year (January-March period), the number of bank accounts worth Rs. Besides, deposits decreased by 1 thousand 312 crores. As of March, there are 1 lakh 15 thousand 890 bank accounts with deposits above Rs 1 crore. 7 lakh 40 thousand 150 crores are deposited as these banks above Rs. At the end of December last year (year 2023), the number of bank accounts with deposits of more than 1 crore rupees was 1 lakh 16 thousand 908. The total deposits of these banks were Tk 7 lakh 41 thousand 462 crores.

Accordingly, the number of accounts of millionaires has decreased by 1 thousand 18, and the deposits in their accounts have decreased by 1 thousand 11 crores in the span of three months.

At the end of the mentioned March quarter, the total number of depositors in the bank sector stood at 15 lakh 71 thousand 202. Against these calculations, the deposits are 17 lakh 62 thousand 303 crores.

But account of crores does not mean account of millionaire citizen. As many individuals keep more than one crore rupees in the bank, so many institutions also deposit crores of rupees in the bank. In other words, the bank account of crores of rupees means both individuals and organizations at the same time. Moreover, there is no specific limit on how many bank accounts individuals and organizations can open. It also makes one organization or person have multiple accounts. Among them are the accounts of various government institutions and organizations worth crores of rupees.

According to Bangladesh Bank data, at the end of the March quarter of this year, the number of accounts of depositors between 1 crore and 5 crore taka stood at 91 thousand 623, and the deposits were 1 lakh 94 thousand 517 crore taka. 12 thousand 446 deposits of 5 crore 1 to 10 crore taka amounting to 88 thousand 568 crore taka.

At the end of last quarter of December 2023, the number of accounts of depositors between 1 crore and 5 crore rupees was 92 thousand 516. Where the amount of deposit was one lakh 94 thousand 336 crore taka. And the amount of deposit was 89 thousand 451 crores as 12 thousand 652 from 5 crores 1 to 10 crores.

During the discussed period, there are 4 thousand 396 accounts between 10 crores and 15 crores, 1 thousand 961 accounts between 15 crores and 20 crores, 1 thousand 211 accounts between 20 crores and 25 crores, and 875 accounts of depositors between 25 crores and 30 crores. And there are 501 accounts between 30 crores and 35 crores and 369 accounts between 35 crores and 40 crores, and 681 accounts between 40 crores and 50 crores.

The number of accounts with deposits of more than 50 crore rupees is 1 thousand 826. At the end of last December quarter, the number of accounts between 10 crores and 15 crores was 4 thousand 82, 2 thousand 2 between 15 crores and 20 crores, 1 thousand 345 between 20 crores and 25 crores, and 912 accounts of depositors between 25 crores and 30 crores. Besides, there were 512 accounts between 30 crore and 35 crore rupees, 480 between 35 crore and 40 crore rupees, 738 accounts between 40 crore rupees and 50 crore rupees and 1 thousand 812 accounts with more than 50 crore rupees.

According to the Central Bank data, in 1975 there were only 47 bank accounts worth crores of rupees, in 2015 it increased to 57 thousand 516. This number was 82 thousand 625 in March 2020 at the beginning of the global epidemic Corona, currently it stands at about 1 lakh 15 thousand 890.
