Two life sentences for killing bank security personnel


The court has sentenced two persons to life imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000 for two more years in connection with the murder of a security guard while robbing a bank in Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria.

Additional District Judge of Brahmanbaria 2nd Court Judge Abdul Hannan announced the verdict on Tuesday (June 25) afternoon.

Also, in this case, the court sentenced three people to 10 years in prison and also sentenced them to two months in prison without paying a fine of 10,000 taka. A defendant named Saddam was acquitted in the case.

Rasu Mia Jamal Hossain alias Masud (30) of Bagir village in Ashuganj and Khalek Miar Jamir Hossain (34) of Araisidha village were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Those who were sentenced to 10 years in prison are the son of Elai Mia of Charchartala village of Ashuganj. Mustafa (34), Nawab Mia’s son Shahadat Hossain (24) and Abul Kashem’s son Masud Mia (43).

According to court sources, the accused accused attempted to rob Rajesh Biswas (23), a security guard of Ashuganj branch of the state-owned Bangladesh Development Bank Limited (BDBL) at midnight on September 24, 2020. As there was a weekly public holiday after the incident, no one knew about the incident. The incident came to light on September 26. The police recovered the bloodied body of security guard Rajesh from that branch of BDBL around 12:15 that night with his hands, feet and face tied.

On September 27, BDBL Ashuganj branch manager Mobaswer Hossain filed a murder case at Ashuganj police station. In the case, unidentified persons have been accused of murdering the security guard and attempting to break into the bank, steal and rob the vault.

The investigating officer of the case, Ashuganj Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Habibur Rahman accused six people and submitted the charge sheet to the court on April 22, 2021. The court framed the charge on 15 November 2023.

Brahmanbaria Court Police Inspector Kazi Didarul Alam told Jago News that it was a controversial case. 18 witnesses appeared in the court and testified with the efforts of the court police. Two convicts who were sentenced to life imprisonment were present during the pronouncement of the verdict. Three other accused are absconding.
