Waqar-uz-Zaman is the new army chief

Lieutenant General Walker-uz-Zaman has been appointed as the next army chief of Bangladesh. He will replace the current army chief General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed. The appointment of the new army chief will be effective from June 23.

This information was informed in a circular sent by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday (June 11).

According to ISPR, Lt. Gen. Waqar-uz-Zaman was commissioned in the Bangladesh Army with the 13th Long-Term Course on December 20, 1985. He completed his graduation from Defense Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur and Joint Services Command and Staff College, UK.

He also holds ‘Masters of Defense Studies’ from National University and ‘Masters of Arts in Defense Studies’ from King’s College, University of London, UK.

His long 39 years of illustrious military career is filled with command, staff and training experience. He served as vice-captain and captain of 17 East Bengal Regiment from 12 February 2009 to 8 June 2010. At that time, he received great praise for serving with devotion and discretion in suppressing the then BDR rebellion.

Subsequently, Lt. Gen. Waqar-uz-Zaman served as the Commander of 46 Independent Infantry Brigade for over two years from 27 July 2011 to 11 November 2013. He commanded the 9th Infantry Division for three years from 2 April 2014 to 23 February 2017 as GOC.

As Area Commander, Savar Area and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 9th Infantry Division, he served as the Parade Commander of Victory Day Parade 2014, 2015 and 2016 with great success for three consecutive years. In recognition of this rare achievement he was awarded the ‘Sena Gaurav Padak’ (SGP).

As a staff, Lt. Gen. Walker-uz-Zaman served in a brigade deployed in Chittagong Hill Tracts, the School of Infantry and Tactics (S&T) and various posts and assignments at the headquarters.

He also imparted training to national and foreign army personnel of all ranks with great reputation at JCO NCO Academy (JNA), School of Infantry and Tactics and Bangladesh Institute of Peace Support and Training (BIPSOT) as an instructor.

He served as Assistant Military Secretary, Deputy Military Secretary and Military Secretary (MS) for a long time in the Army Headquarters Military Secretary’s branch. Prior to taking over as Chief of General Staff (CGS) of Army Headquarters, GS Wing, he was serving as Prime Minister’s Principal Staff Officer (PSO-AFD) in the Prime Minister’s Office, Armed Forces Department.

Lt. Gen. Walker-uz-Zaman served under the UN banner as a military observer in Angola and as a senior operations officer in Liberia.

He was awarded the ‘Outstanding Service Medal’ (OSP) for his meritorious contribution to the Army.

Besides, Lieutenant General Walker-uz-Zaman has participated in a significant number of seminars, symposiums and conferences at home and abroad as a representative of the Bangladesh Army and has brightened the image of the Bangladesh Army.

Waqar-uz-Zaman’s wife in personal life is Sarahnaz Kamalika Zaman. The couple has two daughters together (Samiha Raisa Zaman and Shaira Ibn Zaman). Waqar-uz-Zaman is well known as a gentleman, sportsman and lively officer.
