Sophia made history by becoming the first Muslim woman MLA of Odisha


Sophia Firdaus has created a new history in the assembly elections of Odisha state of India. She became the first woman legislator of that state. 32-year-old Sophia won from Baravati-Cuttack seat in the state for Congress.

Sophia Firdaus became the first Muslim woman MLA in the state by defeating BJP’s Purnachandra Mohapatra by more than 8,000 votes.

Sofia is involved in politics from her family. His father is senior Congress leader Mohammad Moquim. He was also MLA from the same seat. However, he was disqualified due to his conviction in a corruption case. Later Sophia got Congress nomination for this seat.

Congress leader Mohammad Moquim holds the post of Managing Director of ‘Metro Builders Private Limited’. He was convicted in the vigilance court for the financial scam of Odisha Rural Housing and Development Corporation Limited. That is why Moquim could not be a candidate in the election.

As a result, his daughter Sophia was nominated for that seat from the party. A graduate in Civil Engineering from Kalinga Institute of Technology, Sophia received her Masters from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in 2022.

He was associated with his father’s company ‘Metro Builders Private Limited’ before contesting the elections. Her husband is Miraj Ul, a prominent industrialist of the state. Miraj congratulated Sofia on social media after his wife’s win.

Odisha’s first woman Chief Minister, Nandini Shatapathi, was also elected MLA from Baramati-Cuttack constituency in 1972. Many are matching her victory with Sofia.

Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi has again been elected as the Chairperson of the Indian Congress parliamentary party. President Mallikarjun Kharge announced the name of Sonia Gandhi as the party chairperson in the meeting of the Congress parliamentary party on Saturday (June 8). After that, all Congress MPs present in the meeting agreed to that name.

After being re-elected as Chairperson on Saturday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said, Sonia is our guide. We are very happy that he has been re-elected as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee.
