600 kg of fish seized during theft at Benazir resort


The Anti-Corruption Commission has seized about 600 kg of fish while stealing it from the Savanna Eco Resort of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed in Gopalganj. These fish were seized on Friday (June 8) night. 83 thousand 754 has been deposited in the government treasury by selling the seized fish.

On May 27, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad Assamach Jaglul ordered the seizure of 345 bigha (114 acres) of land in the name of Benazir Ahmed, his wife and children and the freezing of 33 bank accounts in their names in various public and private banks. Hussain. These include the Savannah Eco Resort and Natural Park. Later on May 26, the same court ordered freezing of Benazir Ahmed, his wife and three daughters’ immovable assets, bank accounts in their names and shares in their names in various companies.

According to the ACC sources, while the process of appointing the receiver of the assets is ongoing, the ACC officials received information that various assets including fish from the pond located in the Savannah Eco Resort are being stolen from the encroached property. When the matter was reported to the higher authorities of the ACC, they gave instructions to collect information on the spot. Then an ACC team went to Savannah Eco Resort on Friday. At that time, they saw fishing in a 20-acre pond inside the resort. Accused and others escaped on being informed of ACC team’s arrival. At this time, 555 kg of tilapia and 37.50 kg of catla fish were seized. Later it was auctioned and sold for 83 thousand 754 taka.

In the questioning of the fishermen engaged in fishing, it is known that they are fishing on the orders of the fish hatchery officer of the resort, Safiqul Islam. When the matter was reported to the higher authorities of the ACC, they ordered to take legal action. Then the assistant director of the ACC in Gopalganj. Sohrab Hossain filed a case at Sohel Sadar police station. Sofiqul Islam, the fish hatchery officer of the resort, was accused.

The resort authorities announced the closure of Savannah Eco Resort and Natural Park from June 3 due to server complications. Benazir Ahmed, who was the director general of RAB from 2015 to 2020 and inspector general of police from 2020 to 2022, built Savannah Eco Resort and Natural Park in Bairagitol village of Sahapur Union of Sadar Upazila in Gopalganj.
