Begging to be eradicated through training: Social Welfare Minister


Minister of Social Welfare Dr. Dipu Moni said that begging will be eradicated through training and counseling of real beggars through accurate statistics.

On Sunday (June 9) in the session of the National Parliament, the Minister of Social Welfare Dr. Dipu Moni said these things. Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the session.

Meanwhile, Dipu Moni also said that 17 thousand 710 beggars have been rehabilitated through the district and upazila administration. Besides, the beggars detained in Dhaka city are being kept in government shelters and provided with employment through training.

Dr. Dipu Moni said that there are no accurate statistics on how many addressless people who depend on others for their livelihood live in Dhaka city. Due to river erosion, extreme poverty, disease, illiteracy etc. some people are resorting to begging who really need help. However, some unemployed people have opted for begging as an easy way of earning. Besides, some miscreants are begging the helpless people to serve their interests.

The government has taken up the program titled ‘Rehabilitation and alternative employment of begging population’ from the financial year 2010-11. Through this program beggars are being rehabilitated across the country. Meanwhile, 17 thousand 710 beggars have been rehabilitated through the district and upazila administration.

He said that in the financial year 2023-2024, Bangladesh National Social Welfare Council has provided a grant of Tk 50 lakh in 64 districts in the sub-sector of begging and rehabilitation. There are plans to provide this grant in the future as well.
